House hunting is traumatizing. While this MAY be a slight overstatement, that’s what it feels like right now for Jim and myself. We did the wedding thing (which turned out better than we could have imagined – a post will hopefully follow soon!), now we want to do the actually living together in OUR place thing. Murphy is certainly throwing many huge (HUGE!) boulders our way on this one. I get that we are being uber picky; however, we tried the not being picky thing and that didn’t work out, either. It’s the pits. Literally. We may just give up and run away and pitch a tent in the woods and poop in a hole in the ground at this point.
House #4 we LOVE (more or less). It needs a ton of work, both inside and outside, but with a bunch of initial elbow grease, it’s totally livable. No sweat, right? Elbow grease we can do. Except for the poop in the ground part. The septic failed inspection. To be accurate, inspection consisted of checking health department records, popping the distribution box lid and calling it a day. The ground doesn’t perk. AT ALL. To fix the issue, we’re looking at a 40 GRAND alternative system. Bank wouldn’t budge on the price, won’t fix the system. Nope, nada. We couldn’t even have the house if we wanted because the appraisal is more than the renovation loan we would have to take out to fix the septic. Not to mention the 40K would put us severely over our house budget. Boulders. Big’ens.
So we got married, had our party, communed with the wildlife on our one day ‘honeymoon’, and then went back to everyday life. Regrouping after the House #4 failure. Enter in House #5. Potential… Great price, great location. Hard to consider a new house when we still want House #4. So we drive by House #5. Kinda nice on the outside, apparent it needs a lot of work. Call Ms. Realtor, meet at the house, walk through, try not to be disgusted by the condition the house is in. Decide to put an offer in next morning. House is already OFF THE MARKET. It was on the market for 5 days. And the house is trashed, needs a new HVAC, plumbing issues, a kitchen reno, a possible bath reno, new garage door, etc. and it’s already gone. BAH!!
We just cannot seem to catch a break. Like I said, we are being picky, but I think we’re allowed to be picky. It’s just so very frustrating and stressful.
