Two weekends ago, my sweetheart (cough) of a horse got out of his field. We're still not sure WHO pulled down the electric tape fence, but it is entirely likely it was him. So, after quite a while running around like a crazy man and herding the mares (ahem, girlfriends), everyone was caught and enclosed in their proper fields and segregated once again. Girls with the girls and the boys with the boys.
In the excitement of the night, Snipes cut up his leg. I listened to my voice mail when I was coming home from the Renaissance Festival that Saturday saying that my vet (the barn owner) was out of town and Sniper may or may not need stitches. She would look in the morning when she was back in town.
Next morning he was fine - the cut wasn't bad at all, and the vet (barn owner) said she'll keep it wrapped and clean. Have I ever mentioned how much I love the barn owner (vet)? She is simply awesome and I'm really fortunate boarding at her place.
Fast forward to this weekend. Another call from the vet (barn owner) that Sniper was lame and limping, and guess what?!, she was out of town again. Damn horse, why can't you do these things when she's here?
So to the barn I went Friday morning to assess the situation. Called other vets because I was freaking out he was lame in both front feet. After calming down and watching him for a while, I agreed with everyone else he was just off in the one foot. Cancelled the vet call and decided to just wait it out. (Which was what the barn owner (vet) suggested and in hindsight, was exactly what needed to happen.)
He's on the mend. He has a slice in the sole of his foot that is now infected and abscessed. Seems like he probably did this the same night he was being a nut and the antibiotics he was on for his cut retarded the infection from showing up until this weekend.
So, for now, we're keeping our fingers crossed that it will stay clean and he should be good as new in a few weeks. Silly horse, you had to go and ruin the chances of riding these last beautiful weekends before the yuck wet fall starts, eh?
